Leveling inscription is cheapest and easiest if your other primary profession is herbalism. But whether you choose to stockpile your herbs or buy them all on the auction house, power-leveling inscription is a breeze if you know which recipes to focus on to level the fastest.
Here’s a quick 1-450 inscription leveling guide to help you make leveling this profession a lot less complicated.
Inscription Leveling Guide: Levels 1-50


  • Go to the inscription trainer and learn Apprentice Inscription.
  • Levels 1-15: Ivory Ink— Alabaster Pigment, which comes from milling Earthroot, Peacebloom, or Silverleaf
  • Levels 15-30: Scroll of Intellect (Ivory Ink and Light Parchment) or Scroll of Stamina (Ivory Ink and Light Parchment)
  • Levels 30-50: Moonglow Ink— 2 Alabaster Pigments
  • Go back to the inscription trainer and learn Journeyman Inscription.
Inscription Leveling Guide: Levels 50-125


  • Levels 50-75: Armor Vellum (Moonglow Ink and 2 Light Parchments)
  • Levels 75-80: 20 Midnight Ink— 2 Dusky Pigments, which come from milling Briarthorn, Bruiseweed, Mageroyal, or Stranglekelp
  • Levels 80-100: Glyph of Rejuvenation (Midnight Ink and Light Parchment), Glyph of Maul (Midnight Ink and Light Parchment)
  • Levels 100-105: 65 Lion’s Ink—2 Golden Pigments, which come from milling Kingsblood, Liferoot, or Wild Steelbloom.
  • Levels 105-125 Glyph of Holy Light (Lion’s Ink and Common Parchment), Glyph of Fire Nova Totem (Lion’s Ink and Common Parchment), Glyph of Arcane Missiles (Lion’s Ink and Common Parchment)
  • Go back to the trainer and learn Expert Inscription.
Inscription Leveling Guide: Levels 125-200


  • Levels 125—150: Glyph of Blink (2 Lion’s Ink and Common Parchment), Glyph of Divinity (2 Lion’s Ink and Common Parchment), Glyph of Lightning Bolt (2 Lion’s Ink and Common Parchment)
  • Levels 150-155: Jadefire Ink— Emerald Pigment, which comes from milling Fadeleaf, Goldthorn, or Khadgar’s Whisker
  • Levels 155-175: Glyph of Evocation (Jadefire Ink and Common Parchment), Glyph of Renew (Jadefire Ink and Common Parchment), Glyph of Shadow Bolt (Jadefire Ink and Common Parchment

  • Levels 205-225: Glyph of Sinister Strike (Celestial Ink and Heavy Parchment), Glyph of Searing Pain (Celestial Ink and Heavy Parchment), Glyph of Consecration (Celestial Ink and Heavy Parchment), Glyph of Healing Stream Totem (Celestial Ink and Heavy Parchment , Glyph of Starfire (Celestial Ink and Heavy Parchment)
  • Levels 225-250: Scroll of Agility IV (Celestial Ink and 2 Heavy Parchments), Glyph of Dispel Magic (Celestial Ink and Heavy Parchment), Glyph of Cleaving (Celestial Ink and Heavy Parchment)

  • Go back to the trainer and learn Grand Master Inscription.
Inscription Leveling Guide: Levels 350-450


  • 350-355: Ink of the Sea—2 Azure Pigments, which come from milling any Northrend herbs.
  • Levels 355-375: Scroll of Spirit VII and VII (Ink of the Sea and 2 Resilient Parchments), Scroll of Intellect VII and VIII (Ink of the Sea and 2 Resilient Parchments), Scroll of Strength VII and VIII (Ink of the Sea and 2 Resilient Parchments)
  • Levels 375-380: Snowfall Ink—2 Icy Pigments, which come from milling any Northrend herbs.
  • Levels 380-385: Glyph of Ice Lance (Ink of the Sea and Resilient Parchment)
  • Northrend Inscription Research—This can only be done once a day, so put it on your list of daily items to do.
  • Levels 385-450: Any glyphs you discover through your Northrend Research
